SKU: SNC042 Category:

At the beginning of the French Revolutionary Wars the British cavalry comprised some 30 regiments, of which 14 were classified as light cavalry. The most senior were the Household Cavalry, the 1st and 2nd Life Guards, which had been formed in 1788 from the previous troops of Horse Guards and the Horse Grenadier Guards.

The remainder of the heavy cavalry, in order of seniority, comprised the royal Regiment of Horse Guards (commonly known as the Blues, a reference to their distinguishing dark blue coats) the Blues were often regarded as part of the Household Cavalry although not officially having that distinction at this time, the 1st-7th Dragoon Guards and 1st-6th Dragoons, although the latter were more medium cavalry, mid-way between the heavy and light regiments.
